Abdominoplasty - Tummy Tuck Before After

Abdominoplasty, better known as a "tummy tuck," is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall.

During the operation, an extensive incision is made which runs across the lower abdomen.

Most commonly, the surgeon will make a long incision from hipbone to hipbone, just above the pubic area. A second incision is made to free the navel from surrounding tissue. With partial abdominoplasty, the incision is much shorter and the navel may not be moved, although it may be pulled into an unnatural shape as the skin is tightened and stitched.

For the first few days following surgery, the abdomen will feel swollen and tight. You will feel some pain and discomfort for which your surgeon will prescribe medication. Your will be given instructions for showering and changing your dressings.

At first you may not be able to stand up straight without feeling a tugging sensation, but you should start walking as soon as possible. Though initially you will be stooped over, you will soon be able to straighten up completely as your body accommodates to your newly tightened abdomen. Postoperative bruising is minimal, but swelling is substantial. It takes up to three months for the swelling to disappear. You may also experience numbness of the abdominal skin and it may take several months for the sensation to return.

Surface stitches or staples will be removed in five to seven days and lighter bandages will then be applied. These bandages are soon replaced with an abdominal support garment, which is worn for several weeks. During this time, you must refrain from heavy lifting, straining or over-activity. Your surgeon will let you know when to resume your normal activities based on the extent of surgery and your progress.

1.- In abdominoplasty, generally, an incision is made across the pubic area and around the umbilicus. Skin in the shaded area is separated from the abdominal wall.
2.- To tighten the abdominal wall, the surgeon brings loose underlying tissue and muscle together with sutures.
3.- Abdominal skin is drawn downward. and the excess is removed. A small opening is made to bring the umbilicus through.
4.-The postoperative patient shown with reconstructed navel and resultant scars.

Calf Implants Implant

Calf implants are inserted to create the impression of greater definition and contour in the lower leg area.

The procedure is usually performed under light sedation with local anesthetic or under general anesthetic. Incisions are made in the crease behind the knee and the surgeon creates pockets to hold the implants beneath the fascia. In some cases balloon-like tissue expanders may be used temporarily to allow for gradual stretching of the tissue. After several weeks the expanders are replaced with the implant. If the degree of enlargement is not excessive, the permanent implants are placed immediately. Often, two implants are placed in each leg.

Compression stockings are placed on the calves after the procedure and these will be worn for about 2-3 weeks. There are generally no bandages.

It is suggested that a shoe with a 1 ½ to 2 inch heel (like cowboy boots) should be worn after surgery. Bed rest immediately following surgery is recommended but after 24hours, you can get up to eat or go to the bathroom, stairs are to be completely avoided, though. You will, however, need to be off their feet for about a week with the legs elevated. Keeping the legs elevated will reduce the swelling and therefore reduce pain. Some patients, usually male, experience pain for the first 48 hours after surgery. You can expect to feel as if you have had an intense calf work out that lasts for 2 weeks, although the pain medication prescribed by your doctor can help.

Recovering individual and varies from person to person. People with office jobs can usually get back to work in one or two weeks. As your legs adjust to the implants, there will be discomfort. Most patients find walking on their toes or in shoes with heels the most comfortable during this healing phase. Avoid strenuous use of the legs for at least six weeks to allow for healing and to make sure the implant has securely positioned itself. Upper body workouts can be resumed in a week; light leg workouts can begin in three weeks.

A minimum of twenty days after the surgery must pass before the patient can fully return to every day activities. Of course, intense activities as sports must be postponed for at least tree months.

Liposculpture - Liposuction Before After

Liposuction is a surgical technique to remove fat. It is not an alternative to weight loss; it is a method for removing fat that does not respond to a healthy diet and regular exercise. The abdomen, buttocks, thighs, flanks, hips, knees, calves and upper arms are commonly treated areas.

Liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia, along with intravenous sedation, or general anesthesia depending on your health and the extent of the procedure. Normally, during the procedure, a hollow suction tube, or "cannula," is passed through small skin incisions and manipulated to break-up unwanted fat. It is then transferred through the tube by the attached vacuum machine. While fat is removed by suctioning it through small tunnels, the skin remains connected to the underlying muscles. This helps preserve the nerves and blood vessels supplying the skin and also helps to decrease the laxity of the skin. The surgeon also leaves a thin blanket of fat attached to the skin to prevent the cannula from getting too close to the skin and causing excessive rippling or other irregularities.

The extent of the post-operative swelling and bruising is dependent on whether you tend to bruise or swell easily. The amount you can expect varies for each individual but past surgeries or injuries should be a good indication. Keep the treated area elevated, above the level of your heart. Applying cold compresses, or small ice packs will reduce swelling and relieve discomfort. Many patients use a water-tight plastic sandwich bag filled with frozen berries or peas. Regular icing is the key to relieving swelling and the resulting pain.

You will feel tender and sore for a few days to several weeks after surgery. Some fluid may drain from your incisions post surgery. To prevent fluid build-up, a small drainage tube may be inserted beneath your skin for a few days. Antibiotics to prevent infection may also be prescribed. To control swelling and to help your skin adjust to its new contours, you will be fitted with a snug, elastic garment to wear over the treated area for a few weeks. Your surgeon will likely request follow-up visits to review your progress.

Recovery is individual and varies from person to person. After liposuction, however, you will begin to see a noticeable difference in the shape of your body almost immediately with additional differences occurring during the following 4 to 6 weeks as the swelling subsides.

Although you may not feel like it, you should try to walk as soon as possible to reduce swelling and prevent blood clots from forming in your legs. Strenuous activity should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks. Although most bruising and swelling will disappear within 3 weeks, some swelling may remain for 6 months and up to a year.
